LPG Shortage in Pokhara

LPG Shortage in Pokhara

Liquefied Petroleum Gas gripped in Pokhara, there is no sign of LPG supply easing anytime soon, thanks to the apathy authorities.

Paucity of cooking gas has had a telltale impact on almost every household, especially on students living as tenants in Pokhara.

“I search for a cylinder of gas everyday, but end up frustrated at the end after scouting the entire bazaar,” said Manju Sharma of Nayabazaar, “Though I’ve also deposited certain amount with a local gas trader in advance, it appears I will have to wait for a long time.”

Sharma and hundreds of others vented their ire at the nonchalant attitude of the local administration.

“If on the one hand, they have done nothing to ensure smooth supply of cooking gas for the past on-and-a-half months; on the other, they’ve ignored to prevent black-marketing as traders only oblige big hotels and shops,” Sharma said.

Amidst the charges, the district monitoring committee of Kaski raided a number of LPG depots in Pokhara today.

“We monitored the depots, but except for one, we found all the other depots had run out of stock,” said Kaski Assistant Chief District Officer Chandranath Gautam, adding that 50 full LPG cylinders were found at Samriddhi Traders at Ranipauwa.

Besides Samriddhi traders, DNR Traders at Lakeside, Rushri Traders in Jarebahar and Ashok Asmit Traders at Zero Kilometre were monitored today.

Meanwhile, LPG Traders’ Association Kaski chairperson Narayan Poudel clarified that the gas crunch had to do with repairs of the gas plant in India. “The scarcity will end as soon as repairs at the plant in Barauni, India, is completed,” he said.

Chief of Nepal Oil Corporation Lekhnath, Manoj Thakur confirmed the reason behind the gas crunch.

Every month 100,000 LPG cylinders consumes Pokhara. Two dozen of LPG traders are in Pokhara

Four Chinese Soldier Kill by North Korean After Robbery

Four Chinese Soldier kill by North Korean after robbery

During a robbery four Chinese citizens soldier killed by a North Korean. They crossed the border into China in search of food, media reports said Monday.
The young North Korean soldier crossed the border in late December and stole money and food at a house before killing four residents in China’s northeastern city of Helong, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency and Dong-A Ilbo newspaper said.
Both cited sources in the border areas between China and the North.
The victims were either shot dead or beaten to death, Dong-A said, adding he was later shot and captured by Chinese authorities.
“Killing several Chinese nationals... is a major crime, so there are good possibilities that China, unlike other runaway North Korean soldiers captured before, will not hand him over to the North,” said an unnamed Seoul official quoted by Yonhap.
All able-bodied young men in the North are subject to 10 years of military service. Many army bases are known to suffer food shortage and starving troops often cross the border to China in search of food.
Private markets cropping up across the North in recent years have helped ease starvation among ordinary citizens.
Seoul’s unification ministry that handles North Korea affairs declined to comment on the incident.
“Chinese authorities have already reached an agreement with the North not to officially announce it,” Yonhap quoted the Seoul official as saying.
Dong-A said the victims were two elderly ethnic Korean couples. Koreans make up for about 30 per cent of the population in China’s Yanbian Korean autonomous prefecture that borders the North.
“It has become pretty common for the past decade that North Koren soldiers sneak across the border at night to seek food here,” Dong-A quoted one resident of the area as saying.
An official with the Yanbian police told AFP he had no knowledge of the reported incident.
The border with China is a major route for escape for North Koreans fleeing poverty and repression at home. They also cross the border temporarily to find food and jobs.
Thousands flee by secretly crossing into China and later travelling to a third country before seeking resettlement in the South.

Due To Bad Weather Flight of Pokhara Has Cancelled.

All flight of Pokhara was forced to cancel, except one, because of bad weather and poor visibility today.

After a Nepal Airlines aircraft successfully took off for the Capital this morning, the weather condition deteriorated, and all other flights from the airport were cancelled, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Nepal.

For today, the Buddha Air had scheduled six flights, the Yeti Airlines seven and the Simrik Air three to Kathmandu, according to Pokhara Airport's chief Deepak Baral.

They were all cancelled.

Likewise, a Tara Air flight to Jomsom of Mustang also witnessed the same fate.

The Pokhara Valley witnessed a drizzle and was blanketed by thick fog throughout the day. The mercury has also plummeted.

The two districts behind the mountains, have received a heavy snowfall, that is Manang and Mustang.

The mountains in the Annapurna Range are all snowclad.

Manage Fewa Lake

A major tourist destination in Pokhara is Fewa lake. Pokhara Sub-metropolis said that the responsibility of protecting and managing Fewa Lake. The water of Fewa Lake is quite polluted.
To protect and manage the lake, the sub-metropolis today formed Fewa Lake Conservation and Management Office at the Lakeside.

Mahesh Baral, Executive Officer at the sub-metropolis, said that they had established the office to study the past as well as present efforts made to protect the lake and devise a sustainable solution in coordination with several NGOs and INGOs.

“We have allocated a budget of Rs 1.3 million to run the office as well as to protect the lake for now,” Baral said. He informed that they have proposed a budget of Rs five million for the project in the next fiscal.

“Several organisations including UN Habitat and Hariyo Ban have pledged to lend their support for the conservation of the lake,” Baral added.

The office has been authorised to carry out a study on all the past reports prepared on protection, development and encroachment control and formulate a comprehensive work plan for the protection of the lake. The office has been authorised to launch a sanitation campaign in collaboration with various organisations along with removal of water hyacinth, among others, to beautify the lake.

Likewise, the office can take initiative to collect fund for conservation of the lake from home and abroad, according to Baral.

Although several organisations are involved, efforts made so far to conserve the lake have failed to yield positive results.

The Nepal Electricity Authority has been generating power from the lake, the Department of Irrigation is operating a canal, Nepal Agriculture Research Centre is breeding fish in the lake while the District Development Committee collects tax from boatmen.

Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya the Administrator of Western Region said that the sub-metropolis is taking the responsibility of conserving  the Fewa lake. Within two years tangible results can be expected.

The condition of Fewa Lake has deteriorated over time. The area of water body has shrunk from 10 square kilometers to half. The average depth of water is 8.6 meters while the maximum depth is 19 meters. Sand and boulders have accumulated on the ground of the lake and water hyacinth has contaminated it, making it unsuitable for drinking.
